A forward-looking thesis document, modeled on Y Combinator's “Requests for Startups.” If one resonates, treat it as conviction, not a constraint — then come build it.

How to read this

This is a list of problems, not a list of products. Each entry has a thesis (the bet), a why now (why this is buildable and ownable in this decade, not the last one), and a tailwind (where capital — venture or non-dilutive government capital — is already pooling around the theme).

You do not need to build one of these to raise money. As YC says of its own RFS, these represent a fraction of what gets funded — if one resonates, treat it as extra conviction, not a constraint. The point is to compress a lot of signal into one place: what the best early-stage investors are actively underwriting, what the Indian state is willing to co-finance, and where the structural gaps are large enough to build a generational company.

A note on honesty. These ideas are synthesized from the publicly stated priorities of YC, Peak XV, Accel/Atoms, Antler, and India's government innovation missions. They are not endorsements of any specific idea by any specific fund. The "tailwind" tags tell you where money clusters around a theme — they are a map, not a guarantee. Treat them as a starting point for your own diligence.

The macro thesis: why India, why now

Five forces make this the most interesting decade to start a company in India:

  1. The $4T → $8T decade. India's GDP is projected to roughly double over the next ten years. Markets that were too small to support venture-scale outcomes are crossing the threshold one by one. Investors increasingly believe several Indian companies will go from startup to $10B+ within a decade — a claim that was fantasy in 2015.
  1. AI has stopped being a feature and become the foundation. The frontier has moved from "AI copilots that help people do their jobs" to "AI-native companies that do the work and sell the outcome." Global spend on services dwarfs spend on software — and India is both the world's services back-office and a 60-million-SMB domestic market that has never been properly digitized. That is a rare double exposure.
  1. Sovereign capability is now state policy. India is no longer content to consume foreign technology. The IndiaAI Mission is funding indigenous LLMs and offering subsidized GPU access at a fraction of market rates. The India Semiconductor Mission, the National Quantum Mission, iDEX (defence), IN-SPACe (space), and BIRAC (bio) have turned "deep tech" from a slogan into a procurement line. A ₹10,000 Cr Deep Tech Fund of Funds (plus a second tranche) and a ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development & Innovation scheme exist specifically to de-risk hard, long-gestation bets.
  1. China+1 and the export reordering. Global supply chains are actively diversifying away from single-country concentration. India's ~$770B export base is fragmented, slow, and opaque — which is exactly the condition under which a category-defining aggregator gets built.
  1. Digital Public Infrastructure as a launchpad. UPI, Aadhaar, ONDC, Account Aggregator, DigiYatra, and the geospatial liberalization gave India a set of public rails no other large economy has. The first wave monetized payments. The next wave will build on credit, commerce, health, and logistics rails that are still under-exploited.

The counter-thesis you should hold in your head while reading: most of what gets pitched is a thin wrapper. Google and Accel reportedly dismissed ~70% of 4,000+ Atoms applicants as "AI wrappers." The defensible companies in this document are the ones doing real technical, distribution, or regulatory work — proprietary data loops, hardware, workflow depth, or a wedge into a regulated system. If your version of one of these ideas could be replicated by a competitor with one prompt, it is not yet a company.

One caution the ecosystem itself flags: the "grant liquidity trap" and the growth-stage valley of death are real. Early grants are abundant; Series B+ patient capital for long-cycle hardware is scarce, which is why premier deeptech teams still flip to the US/Singapore. A closing point of view

Three filters separate a fundable version of any idea above from a wrapper:

  1. Where is the loop? The best AI-native companies make their own operation queryable and compounding — every interaction makes the product better. If your idea has no proprietary data or feedback loop, a competitor reproduces it in a weekend.
  1. Are you selling the outcome or the tool? The largest pools of money are in services, not software. "We do the work" beats "we help you do the work" — but it requires owning the operational risk, which is harder and more defensible.
  1. Can you survive the valley? India's grant capital is generous early and thin at Series B+, especially for hardware and deep tech with 5–7 year cycles. Pick an idea whose capital plan you can actually finance to escape velocity — stacking non-dilutive grants early, lining up patient specialist VCs, and being honest about whether the outcome justifies the gestation.

The ideas are the easy part. India's recurring constraint has never been a shortage of theses — it's been the discipline to pick one and build it past the point where it becomes hard. Choose accordingly.
